Acrylic Painting
This is a two-period class. Whether you are just starting or consider yourself a more seasoned painter, explore the diversity of acrylics through this class. Color mixing, technique, and a wide variety of uses for this flexible medium will be utilized. Come and enjoy experimenting with this vivid and versatile paint. Instructor: Jennifer Bonaventura is a working professional artist who has been instructing art classes for all ages for more than five years. The award winning designs which she creates have been internationally published and collected. In addition to fine art originals on canvas, Jennifer works on interior and exterior murals, signs and graphic design projects.

First Steps Watercolor Workshop | NEW!
This is a FOUR period class. If you have always wanted to try watercolor painting, but felt a bit intimidated, this is the class for you. Enjoy demonstrations and individual instruction, as you focus on the process as well as the product while developing your painting skills. The morning session will include a brief demonstration of watercolor techniques and materials and practice. The afternoon session will focus on individual projects with personal attention and guidance allowing for the development of skills and unique styles. Time will be allotted for class critiques. Instructor: Marie Brusher is an accomplished artist in several media. She has developed an acute sense of color and style, sharing her experiences and knowledge of the various arts through demonstrations, workshops, lectures and innovative teaching. In addition, Marie is a board member of the Visual Arts Center.

Mixed Media Jewelry
This is a two-period class. Learn to create fun, personalized and unique jewelry using mixed media techniques. You’ll learn a wide range of techniques using beads, charms, fibers, recycled and found materials, resins, metal, wire and much more to create one-of-a-kind designs. There will be a $25 supplies fee on the first day of class. Instructor: Mary K. McGraw is a local fiber artist and jewelry designer. She currently teaches at The LH Bead Gallery and has been an Education Encore instructor for a number of years.

Computer - One Page “Wonders” with MS Word 2010
Prerequisites: Computer Basics or equivalent experience. Participants need to be comfortable using Windows and menus. Experience with other software and the keyboard is helpful. Explore the possibilities of basic word processing. Create a flyer or recipe with clip art, photos, tables and text. Move on to creating a business card, calendar or address book with templates, plus learn to incorporate tables, text and your own photos. Bring a USB drive to class. Tai Chi
Designed for first time and progressing Tai Chi students. Each class will begin with breathing and flexibility exercises. A combination of Tai Chi postures with ancient healing exercises will follow. Instructor: Lynda Jones has been practicing Tai Chi over 20 years. She studied with Master Chung Jen Cheng of Taiwan before being given permission to teach Tai Chi Yang style form.

Russian/Soviet History: The Cold War
Class discussion of the Cold War begins with the building of the Berlin Wall, speeches by Kennedy and Reagan regarding the “Evil Empire” and spying including East Berlin, Checkpoint Charlie and Gary Powers. Learn about the war for space including the first satellite launches and major conflicts including the Cuban Missile Crises, the standoff of tanks along the border between Eastern and Western Europe, the death of Stalin and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Car Maintenance 101
This course explains in simple everyday language how to operate, service and maintain today’s electronically controlled cars. Topics include: the do’s and don’ts in finding a competent repair shop, questions you need to ask BEFORE work is started on your vehicle, the pros and cons of using synthetic fluids, and mileage effects on using certain oils. Also, get a full explanation of what those yellow and red lights on your dash mean. Instructor: James Morris is an ASE Master L-1 Certified Technician with over 35 years experience maintaining import and domestic vehicles. His radio show on Fox News Radio 94.5 has been helping the do-it-yourselfer as well as the professional technician since 1998.

Get the “inside story” from a prominent criminal defense attorney on what is happening locally, nationally and worldwide. Hear about which laws apply and how they impact citizens. This fascinating class will look at both sides of the story, probe the humor and consider the facts and the hearsay. Be prepared to be challenged to find the truth! F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Jazz Age and The Great Gatsby | NEW!
Some have said the 1990s bore some striking similarities to the Jazz Age, the period from 1918 to 1930. This was a period when the stock market soared and traditional values declined. It ended abruptly with the stock market crash of 1929, which started the Great Depression. F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda typified the corruption and excess of the post-World War I era and no work was more representative of the time than Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Computer - Slide Show Mania with PowerPoint 2010
Prerequisite: “Computer – File Management” or equivalent experience. Basic computer orientation is required. Participants must have familiarity with word processing and Microsoft Word. Bring personal photos and imagination to this fun class to create a slide show to celebrate a birthday, vacation, wedding or special occasion. There will be an introduction to menus, backgrounds, designs, colors, themes, and templates. Much of the class will be self-paced as students build a slide show, insert text, clip art, and photos, and add slide transitions, and sounds or music. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates international music and dance movements. Participants of any fitness level or age can start Zumba right away. It’s fun! Ancient Egyptian History: The New Kingdom
Examine the tombs in both the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. Get an in-depth look at the first to believe in one god under Akhenaton and the treasures of his son King Tut, the dismantling of Akhenaton’s new religion, and the return to the old tradition multi-god pagan Egyptian religion. The mummies’ curse and how it ties to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and treasure. It will also cover the end of the New Kingdom and the beginning of the decline of Egyptian civilization; the invasion by Egypt as far north and west as Lebanon; the first mention of Israel by Thutmosis III; the invasion and defeat of the Hykos. Fishing Florida Waters
This course will cover new, highly developed techniques and equipment now available for the fisherman and fisherwoman. Species covered include inshore and offshore saltwater fish targeted in our local area. Instructor: Ron Barwick is a member of the International Custom Rod Builder’s Guild. He has instructed hundreds of students in fishing rod building as well as conducted fishing technique seminars at Tyndall AFB, University of Florida and numerous marinas in the Panama City area. Ron has been the Service Manager at Half Hitch Tackle in Panama City Beach for the last 13 years.

Digital Photography
This class will focus on digital cameras but any camera will work. Participants must bring a camera with which they are familiar to each class. This class will review universal camera functions and does not instruct on a specific camera. One will learn how to use light, shadow, background, special effects, etc., which will enable one to take better photos. Instructor: Shirley Brown is a professional photographer and graphic designer. Shirley has been an instructor for Education Encore for many years and also teaches at the Gulf/Franklin Campus.

Learn basic vocal technique for a stronger, focused singing voice. These techniques are useful for all vocal styles. The American Short Story | NEW!
Participants will study the short story as a literary genre by reading and discussing two American short stories weekly. Some of the authors included are Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Crane, Edgar Allan Poe, O. Henry, and James Thurber. Participants will be asked to purchase their own text, Great American Short Stories, edited by Wallace and Mary Stegner, cost $7.99. Instructor: Jan Colcord taught all aspects of language arts, including literature, writing, linguistics, and grammar for 30 years, mostly at Bay High School. This is a two-period class. Learn about the many types of jewelry-making wires and tools, plus the basic techniques in wire-working skills. Computer – Digital Image Editing
This is a two-period class. Prerequisites: (1) Access to a computer with a Windows desktop, (2) Ability to open multiple programs, (3) Ability to minimize, maximize and restore Windows, (4) Ability to drag and drop using a mouse, (5) Ability to use scroll bars to position items, and (6) Ability to open Windows Explorer to expand/collapse folders. Students must be comfortable with creating, renaming, and deleting files, folders and subfolders. Learn amazing and creative ways to edit ordinary photographs. Using Photoshop Elements, repair old photographs, correct images, create composite photos and add special effects to images. Prerequisites: “Computer – Basics” or equivalent experience. Participants must be comfortable with mouse and keyboard. Basic understanding and computer experience are necessary to comprehend and apply the valuable knowledge in this moderately structured class. Since there is an endless supply of computer-related questions, this course offers an opportunity to ask and participate with hands-on answers. This non-technical level of learning invites questions ranging from “How do I…?”, “What happens if…?” to “What does it mean when…?” Instructor: Lois Carter has an AS degree from GCSC in Electronics Technology with a computer option and a BS degree from FSU in Social Sciences. She has taught computer applications classes in various venues for over 20 years.

Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga has all the health benefits of yoga while minimizing any safety issues. Postures are modified using a chair either seated or for support in standing poses if needed. Yoga poses increase circulation, flexibility and strength, and is done in specific alignment to teach the body more healthy ways of movement. Yoga breathing practices and meditation are incorporated to aid in relaxation and rejuvenation. Chair yoga is especially designed for those who find it difficult to sit on the floor or get up from the floor, but it is great for anyone who is interested in improving their physical and mental wellbeing. Instructor: Dawn Brooks is a Registered Nurse and has completed Yoga Teachers Training at Discovery Yoga in St. Augustine, FL. This is a yoga program in the Kripalu tradition. Kripalu is sometimes known as the compassionate yoga as it teaches you first how to be compassionate to yourself and then to others.

Conversational Spanish II | NEW!
For students who have taken Spanish I or who have an understanding of Spanish. Develop the skills to understand and use basic information necessary for traveling in Spanish-speaking countries. The Kennedy Assassination – Still a Mystery?
This class will review the historical facts and findings of the Kennedy assassination from 1963 to the present. In-depth examination/analysis of the actual events that transpired which has led to the numerous conspiracy theories, books, and movies about an historical event which still remains a mystery according to most opinion polls of the general public. Instructor will examine the conclusions of the governmental investigations, the many conspiracy theories proposed and the best supporting evidence as to what occurred, so that the interested students can draw their own conclusions as to the crime of the century. Computer – Facebook 101
To participate in this class you must have a Facebook Profile. If you don’t already have a profile, you will create one in the first class. You must have an active e-mail address to join Facebook so be sure you know the e-mail address you use. It is recommended to have an e-mail account on gmail or hotmail or yahoo or any other site separate from your regular e-mail account. Topics to be discussed include: What is Facebook and what is it used for; How to join and find Friends; Creating Your Profile; Keeping Facebook Secure - Privacy Settings; Messages, Notifications, Updates, and more; Organizing Friends (Hiding, Custom Lists); Uploading Pictures & Albums; Pages & Groups (Fans & Friends); What other Social Networks are there; and other topics as questions are asked and interests discovered. Cardio Dance
A cardio class in which dance moves are choreographed to both modern and old school songs. The class also features some dance steps and songs from the legendary Dirty Dancing movie. Instructor: Anna Wilson is a certified fitness instructor and personal trainer. She teaches zumba, cardio kick boxing, step, boot camp, and does personal training. She is an instructor at Gold’s Gym, Club Energy, Harvest Worship Center, and at the Senior Centers in Lynn Haven & Panama City Beach.

Yoga
Become one with Hatha Yoga poses and asanas using breath and meditation to achieve muscular strength, endurance, and relaxation. No matter what your physical condition, age, abilities, or gender, yoga makes you better. Wear stretchable or loose-fitting clothing and bring a large towel or mat. Aquatic Exercise
This class is designed so participants can learn the basics of aquatic exercise. Classes will take place in the indoor, heated pool located in the GCSC Wellness Center. Both the locker rooms and the pool are handicapped accessible. Wear a bathing suit and bring a lock and towel. SWIMMING SKILLS ARE NOT REQUIRED. Instructors: All GCSC Staff have certifications from the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), WaterArt, the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute (ATRI), and the International Sports Conditioning Association (ISCA).

Strategy and Operations in World War II
Develop an understanding of military strategy and the employment of military power during World War II. Emphasize the relationship between offensive and defensive strategies. Evaluate both military and political strategies. Instructor: William J. Heitzig served as US Air Force officer and fighter pilot for 30 years in several command positions. He also served for 36 years as flight and classroom instructor. You don’t want to read dry, boring writing, so don’t write it either! In this class you will master skills and techniques to bring life to your non-fiction stories, essays and books, and craft compelling articles for newspapers and magazines. Non-fiction: Why we read it/what it is; applying specific techniques to liven up your writing; because good writing means rewriting, we’ll talk nuts and bolts of the work; and engaging the reader – can you engage your reader with your words? Location Photography
This course will explore the many facets photography brings to our lives. Topics include travel, animals, and birds with off campus trips to various locations. This is a hands-on approach and techniques will give all students the courage to challenge their artistic abilities while having fun. Participants must furnish their own camera and bring it to all classes. Instructor: Shirley Brown is a professional photographer and graphic designer and has been an instructor for Education Encore for 12 years. She also teaches at the Gulf/Franklin Campus.
