Basic Line Dancing
Learn basic line dance steps and simple dances in this fun fitness class. Partners and experience are NOT necessary, but comfortable shoes are. Bill Bovard has been teaching dance – line dancing, country and western, ballroom – for many years. He started teaching line dancing at GCCC in 1995.

Beginning Italic Calligraphy
Learn how to write basic Italic Calligraphy – a simple, elegant form of calligraphy. Class projects will include bookmarks and envelopes. Materials needed are: (1) Calligraphy pen (suggested: Elegant Writer felt tip – medium and/or broad point) and (2) Pad of tracing paper. Bring $5 to first class to purchase workbook. Rhonda Blankenship is a music teacher and guidance counselor at St. John’s School. She has taken various calligraphy classes and continues to pursue her love of calligraphy.

Car Maintenance 101
This course explains in simple everyday language how to operate, service and maintain today’s electronically controlled cars. Topics include: the do’s and don’ts in funding a competent repair shop, questions you need to ask BEFORE work is started on your vehicle, the pros and cons of using synthetic fluids, and mileage effects on using certain oils. Also, get a full explanation of what those yellow and red lights on your dash mean. James Morris is an ASE Master L-1 Certified Technician with over 35 years experience maintaining import and domestic vehicles. His radio show on Fox News Radio 94.5 has been helping the do-it-yourselfer as well as the professional technician since 1998.

Celebrating Family with PowerPoint 2007
Prerequisite: Computer - Beyond Basics or equivalent experience. Bring your family pictures and imagination and create a slide show celebrating a family reunion, birthday, anniversary or memories of a loved one. A flash drive is needed for class. RoseMarie Anderson began teaching computer lessons in 1995 with the opening of her Computer Learning Center in Panama City. She currently teaches Microsoft programs at Bay Medical Center for employees and Bay Med Plus members.

Discuss the complex nature of therapeutic development in the US and the variety of available therapeutics, the various validation methodologies and drug development procedures. Fun With Flowers
Have you ever wanted to learn how to arrange flowers like the professionals? This is your chance - in this course you will learn how to plan your table with themed arrangements, combine plants and accessories, suitability and compatibility of plants, and size/proportion rules for your living space. You’ll even get to have fun creating your own masterpieces. Students must bring all plants and materials. Co-instructors Emily Smith & Sylvia Holley have been President and Past President of Gulf Beach Garden Club. Both are retired teachers and award winning flower designers.

Ballroom Dance
Prerequisite: Good physical health and mobility. Learn and develop skills in both a fast dance and a slow dance. Emphasis is placed on three important elements of dancing; (1) Foot position, (2) Rhythm and timing, and (3) Leading or following with enough variety to keep your learning experience interesting. As you progress, you will acquire freer movement around the floor while expanding your variety, technique and footwork. Patrick Hornsby is a professional ballroom dancer, competition and showcase dancer, and teacher with 35 years experience.

Beginning Sign Language
An introductory survey course designed for individuals with no prior exposure to American Sign Language. The emphasis is on awareness of the deaf culture, basic lip reading skills, and some basic conversational signs. Mary Nelson is an active interpreter at her church and is active in the deaf community. She has taught American Sign Language for several years. She started at Gulf Coast Community College and continued with various workshops and practical knowledge gained from her friends in the deaf community.

Computer – Preventative Maintenance & Security
Prerequisite: You must be comfortable with mouse and keyboard. Basics & Beyond Basics recommended. The more familiar you are with your computer, the more you will get out of this class. Learn basic virus protection practices for your computer, precautions to take while using the internet, how to avoid scams and hoaxes, how to protect your computer with firewalls, antivirus, spyware, and spam filtering, how to perform basic maintenance tasks, removing cookies, and procedures which will help prevent PC crashes, sluggishness and vulnerabilities. Trish Davis has 22 years experience as a Computer Science Instructor and has extensive practical experience. She uses a variety of techniques to ensure each student is provided with effective hands-on experiences. Italic Calligraphy 2
Prerequisite: You must have completed Beginning Italic Calligraphy before taking this class. Continue the skills you learned in Beginning Italic Calligraphy! Learn how to write Italic Calligraphy with the fine point pen. Complete projects using the fine point pen, as well as projects using combinations of the various nib widths. Projects will include small name cards, complete envelope design, layout and design of a poem, and creative design of greeting cards. Feel free to suggest a project or design a project of your own. Aquatic Exercise
Learn the basics of aquatic exercise. Classes will take place in the indoor, heated pool located in the Wellness Center. Both the locker rooms and the pool are handicapped accessible. Wear a bathing suit and bring a lock and towel. SWIMMING SKILLS ARE NOT REQUIRED. All GCCC Staff have certifications from the Aquatic Exercise Association, WaterArt, the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute, and the International Sports Conditioning Association.

Computer – Basics
Start at the beginning. Learn the basics to understanding your personal computer. Discussion will include: starting and shutting down the computer; start and exit computer programs; common computer terminology; save and open files; sizing windows; minimize, maximize, resize, move and restore a window; understanding the windows desktop taskbar and start menu; drag and drop files; workspace, title bar, task bar, tool bars, scroll bars, pull down menus, and fly-outs. You must be comfortable with creating, renaming, and deleting files, folders and subfolders. In this two period course you will use hands-on techniques, and learn to do amazing and creative things to your ordinary photographs! Using a computer and Photoshop Elements, you will learn to repair old photographs, image correction, make photo composites, and add special effects to your images. Use the free Picasa 2 software to organize and fix simple photo challenges. Glenn VanderPloeg has 30 years experience with computers and Computer Aided Education for the Navy, including 10 years experience with Digital Image Editing, 40 years experience teaching in the Air Force and civilian life in many disciplines.

What is poetry? Does a poem have to rhyme? What makes a poem a classic? Explore these and other questions in this course. Learn about the various types of poems, from sonnets to narrative poems, from free verse to rhyming poetry. Become one with Hatha Yoga poses and Asanas using breath and meditation to achieve muscular strength, endurance, and relaxation. No matter what your physical condition, age, abilities, yoga makes you better. Wear stretchable or loose fitting clothing and bring a large towel or mat. Dawn Brooks is a Registered Nurse and completed Yoga Teachers Training at Discovery Yoga in St. Augustine, FL. This is a yoga program in the Kripalu tradition. Kripalu is sometimes known as the compassionate yoga as it teaches you first how to be compassionate to yourself and then to others.

Indulge your inner historian with this exciting, informative and timely introduction to state-of-the-art techniques that you can put to work immediately in your research. William Zehner is a Certified Genealogist, author, speaker and editor of the Florida State Genealogical Society newsletter; editor and webmaster of the Bay County Genealogical Society. Belly Dance
Energize your body. Inspire your spirit! Belly Dance is a gentle and fun way to increase strength and flexibility. Essentially creative, it allows for personal style and embellishment, making it accessible to people of all ages, sizes, and health conditions. Wear clothing that allows free movement. Janet Jones, Talibah her dance name, began dancing at age 66. In addition to participating in workshops conducted by experts in various styles of belly dance, she has studied with several local instructors.

Boat Safety: Suddenly You Are In Command
Join us for an introduction to boating safety designed for those who may find themselves “suddenly in command” – such as guests, spouses, or children. This course has been designed and approved by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Public Education Department. Become familiar with essential safety information so you can assess the situation, take corrective action and summon help as may be required. A text book entitled About Boating Safety is available for $15. Instructors are members of Flotilla 16 who have been approved by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Shirley Brown is a professional photographer and graphic designer. She has been an instructor for Continuing Education for 12 years. She also teaches at the Gulf/Franklin Center.
