Course Syllabus Statement Regarding Disability

All instructors are encouraged to include in their syllabus a statement inviting students with disabilities to meet with them in a confidential environment. A statement placed on course syllabi indicating a faculty member’s willingness to provide reasonable accommodations to a student with a disability gives the message that the faculty and college see this as very important. Students feel more comfortable approaching faculty if they perceive that there is an accepting environment. Samples of statements that help establish this type of environment might include:

Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your special needs. Please contact Linda Van Dalen, Office of Disability Support Services at 872-3834 in room 59 of the Student Union East (SUE) building to coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities.

If you need academic accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please contact me privately after class, or at my office.

To request academic accommodations (for example, a notetaker, reader, testing accommodations or accommodations for access to materials), students must also register with the Office of Disability Support Services in room 59 of the Student Union East building. It is the campus office responsible for reviewing documentation provided by students requesting accommodations and coordinating services for students with disabilities.
