Q. What are the benefits of migrating users from Hotmail to Outlook Live?

A. This migration from Live.edu to Outlook Live moves your users from Live to the February 2011 Service Update version of Outlook Live.

  • Users: Outlook Live provides users and faculty with anywhere access to 10GB mailboxes, through a premium Outlook experience across the desktop, web and mobile device, including support for additional browsers such as Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

New Login page.

Q. Will users need to use a different link to access e-mail after the migration?

A. After the migration completes, the Mail link within the header of Windows Live services such as SkyDrive will automatically redirect users to Outlook Live. You do not have to make any specific changes to enable this. The link to the Outlook Live mail experience is http://www.outlook.com/my.gulfcoast.edu.

Q. How will I know when my mailbox is moved?

A. Email notifications will be sent to all students providing information about the changes and what actions they need to take.

Q. Do users need to take any action?

A. Users need to take the following steps:

  • After all student mailboxes are migrated students need to verify the content of their migrated mailbox.
  • If they use distribution lists and email forwarding, they need to set these up again in Outlook Live.
  • If they use Outlook, they need to connect Outlook and Outlook Live so that they can view their Outlook Live mailbox using Outlook.
  • They can continue to use their Old Live calendar, or transfer data to their new Outlook Live calendar.

Q. How can users transfer calendar appointments and meetings from Hotmail to Outlook Live?

A. How you transfer calendar data depends on whether or not you are also using Microsoft Outlook to view e-mail.

  • If you use both Outlook and Outlook Web App, you can export data from your Windows Live calendar, and then import it to Outlook. Because Outlook and Outlook Web App are different ways of connecting to the same account, no matter how you access the calendar, you'll see all your appointments and meetings.
  • If you only use Outlook Web App to access your e-mail, you can't import calendar data.        However, you can share your Windows Live calendar and view it in Outlook Web App. Viewing the two calendars side-by-side makes it easier to manually transfer appointments and meetings.
