Library Accessibility

Gulf Coast State College provides special services to ensure access to library collections and services for individuals with physical disabilities. The following is a description of the equipment and services we offer. For detailed information about library accessibility, please visit our library accessibility guide.

Access Assistance

A push button located at the bottom of the outdoor ramp alerts library staff to patrons who need assistance accessing the building. There are automatic doors for the restrooms. An elevator provides access to the first and third floors from the second floor lobby.

Equipment and Software

The library has one enAbled computer workstation on the third floor near the reference desk. The enAbled workstation includes the following equipmen and software:

  • An adjustable, wheelchair-accessible desk
  • One desk top Ott Lite lamp which provides full spectrum lighting
  • A wide screen computer monitor
  • Zoomtext software and an accompanying Zoomtext keyboard
  • Microsoft Windows Accessibility software
  • A scanner
  • Software: FSReader 2.0, JAWS, ReadPlease Plus 2003, and ZoomText 9.1

An optical magnification system is available for use in the library lab, room 311. The Telesensory Voyager XL CCD video magnification unit magnifies on a black-and-white monitor. It includes enhanced contrast capabilities, positive-negative image reversal, and tilt screen display.

Computers running Windows XP in the library are equipped with Microsoft Accessibility software.

Assistance with accessibility devices and software is available at the reference desk on the third floor.

Electronic Library Access

Many GCSC resources and services are available electronically outside the libraries.  For more information, consult the GCSC library web page which is available 7 days per week, 24 hours per day, anywhere there is access to the Internet.

Proxy Borrowing

The proxy borrower privilege is a service of the GCSC library to assist students and faculty when the borrower is unable to check out materials from the library. For example, a student with a disability may designate a family member to pick up his or her materials.
