Emergency Medical Technician
The Emergency Medical Services program is accredited by the Florida Department of Health, www.floridahealth.gov/. Graduates of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program are eligible to apply for a State of Florida EMT Licensure and the National Association for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT):
This is the beginning level in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) career ladder. EMTs are trained in basic life support measures including patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillation (AED), oxygen therapy, shock prevention, bandaging, splinting, spinal immobilization, and vehicle extrication.

Requirements for Conditional Acceptance into the EMT Program:

- Complete the Gulf Coast State College application.
- Complete the EMT Program application.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Attend the mandatory EMT Orientation (required paperwork and forms will be provided at this time).
- Must meet all minimum education requirements.
- Complete a satisfactory criminal background check performed at the GCSC Criminal Justice Selection Center (student’s expense).
- Complete a satisfactory 10-panel urine drug screen scheduled by the Public Safety Division (student’s expense).
- Hold a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, maintained throughout
enrollment.
Accepted: American Heart Association BLS for Providers or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers only. - Submit a Physical Examination form with satisfactory results signed by a physician, including complete immunization records (Hep B, MMR, T-Dap, etc.).
- Provide a current (within one year) TB skin test, TB blood test, or chest x-ray report.
- Complete the Mandatory Allied Health Orientation courses (registration and payment completed online through Continuing Education).
- Provide a current Florida Driver License.
- Program uniform, learning materials, and equipment information will be included in the conditional acceptance packet.
Student Selection Process:
The EMT program has selective admission, with limited enrollment. The requirements listed above are minimum requirements, satisfaction of the minimum requirements or admission into Gulf Coast State College does not imply acceptance into the EMT program.
