The Helmet Project

October 20 – November 14

Paintings by Gary Chapman and photographs of installations by Liesa Cole, Jon Cook, Kim Riegel, Jennifer Spears, and Pamela Venz. The exhibit centers around twelve portraits of individuals wearing a helmet. Each helmet is unique in its construction, with one notable exception – each helmet covers the eyes of its owner. As a result the audience is confronted with images bursting with duality; the subjects are staring out in to the audience but cannot see, they are unique individuals yet their identity is concealed, their helmets at once offer protection and inhibit their existence. Mr. Chapman best sums up the paradox when he states: “We are a visually biased society, living in a time in which we can no longer believe in what we see.”
