    Canvas Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) Maintenance
    4/23/2020
    Canvas will be performing maintenance for their Google Apps and Office 365 Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) on 1 May at 1200AM, which will last for up to one hour.  If you have any of these applications installed, you may be unable to utilize these applications for the duration of this maintenance.


    Canvas Outage 28 April 2020, 2:30 AM - 3:00AM for Maintenance
    Please be aware, Canvas Support will be performing a brief maintenance event on 28 April 2020.  It is scheduled to start at 2:30 AM, with maintenance lasting up to 30 minutes.  Users will not be able to access Canvas while maintenance is underway.

    Extended Queued Time for Jobs in the U.S
    12/11/2017 
    Users in the U.S. are seeing wait times up to 5 minutes for job requests in Canvas such as SIS imports, content migrations, and notifications. Components that process these requests are working normally, but the queue is very high. It may take some time for your job requests to start processing, at which point they will run as normal.

    Turnitin and TurnitinUK has now been restored. Service was disrupted from 4.15am PST/12.15pm BST/9.15pm AEDT to 4.39am PST/12.39 BST/9.39pm AEDT. We apologize for any inconvenience


    Intermittent issue with Canvas logins and access to Canvas tools

    Users are seeing intermittent network login errors when accessing Canvas. In addition some Canvas tools appear to be affected by network errors. Canvas engineers have started a remediation plan to restore normal access to Canvas logins and other Canvas tools. However it seems this plan should take a minimum of 30 minutes to execute. We appreciate your continued patience as our Operations team works to implement a solution. We will provide additional details as they become available. We once again offer sincere apology for the inconvenience experienced by your teachers and students.


    UPDATE: Canvas is experiencing interruptions of Service

    The following is an update from the Canvas Learning Management System. Hello - Canvas performance and service recovery continues to progress quickly. Although many users should now be able to access Canvas, there may still be areas of impaired functionality as we work through remaining issues mentioned there would still be areas of impaired functionality between Canvas and Amazon. The biggest area of impact right now is that uploads are not yet working. This includes student uploads to assignments, instructor grade uploads, and similar functions, but also the ability for Canvas' background processes to upload files such as admin reports (which is required as part of the process to generate a report at the account level). You may continue to see issues with this, and other areas in Canvas, as Amazon works to fully restore all services. We appreciate your patience during this situation and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Canvas Support


    UPDATE: Canvas is experiencing interruptions of Service

    The following is the latest update from the Canvas Learning Management System. Canvas Status Update Many users unable to access Canvas due to AWS Outage Hello - Amazon has verified that uploads to their service should be working again; users should be seeing improved performance with their uploads to Canvas. Our DevOps team is continuing to monitor the situation, but we are not currently aware of any lingering issues that affect Canvas functionality at this time. Thank you, Canvas Support

    Canvas Notification Issue

    Canvas is currently experiencing issues with the notification server. If you reply to emails from your students that originated in Canvas using your Outlook, those students may not be receiving your replies. Canvas is working on a solution and should have the issue fixed soon. For the time being you should reply to emails sent through Canvas in Canvas. This will ensure that your replies are received.

    Microsoft Webmail Service Interruption

    Microsoft is currently experiencing service interruptions related to Office 365 Webmail. 

    The error you will see upon attempting to log in to Office 365 Webmail appears as the following:

    We will keep you updated on the status of Microsoft’s troubleshooting efforts as we receive them.

    Please keep in mind this only affects Office 365 Webmail.  You will still be able to access your Outlook Desktop application.


    Problems with Links in Email
    1/29/2019
    We are experiencing a problem with links in received emails. When a link is clicked it gives a “Service Unavailable” error. This is an Office 365 issue. A ticket has been opened with Microsoft to fix the problem. There is no ETA on a resolution at this time. Updates will be sent as more information is received.


    Access to Email Restored
    02/20/2015
    As of 11:15 AM, GCSC email has been restored. Updates are being applied to the email server currently. No emails have been lost; no previous emails are missing, and incoming emails have been delayed, but will still be delivered to your inbox in time. We anticipate that there may be brief (5 minutes or less) outages during the next few hours as these updates are applied. Access to webmail may also be intermittent during these updates. If possible, when you leave your workstation tonight, please close Outlook. This will ensure that restoration of the system proceeds quickly. Please note that when accessing your email, you may receive a notification about certificate errors. This is normal, and you can safely click “Accept” as many times as necessary, and this will allow you to log in to your email. The issue with the certificates is temporary and will be corrected during the update process. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this outage, and appreciate your understanding and patience.

    Delayed Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA) Code Delivery

    The vendor that provides the text code for our Two-Factor-Authentication (2FA) is experiencing problems. The 2FA codes are taking up to several minutes to be delivered. The vendor is working with cellular carriers to resolve the issue. This will affect students logging in through the MyGCSC portal.


    Fiber Maintenance for FLR, 11/12/2020 11pm-2am ET, Bruce/Clarksville, FL
    11/5/2020
    ITS received the following notice for maintenance on the fiber that provides our internet connection. All campus network resources, such as MyGCSC, may be unavailable on November 12, 2020 between 11pm-2am ET.

    On 11/12/2020 at 11pm ET, FLR Engineers will be upgrading the Bruce and Clarksville, FL optical in-line amplifier sites with a new optical ILA chassis and associated line cards.  This work is expected to take up to 2.5 hours of total downtime, but the entire window is reserved in case of issues.

    Backbone traffic and redundant member traffic will automatically re-route during this work.  Single homed connections will see downtime.

    This maintenance is subject to reschedule depending on the impact of "Eta" on the gulf coast region.  The FLR NOC will be monitoring the progress of the storm to make that determination.

    Adobe Services Interruption

    Starting at approximately 10:00 AM (CDT) on 27 May 20, Adobe reported they are having issues with multiple Adobe products to include; multiple applications in their “Experience Cloud” (Adobe Analytics, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Social, Adobe Target, Adobe Audience Manager, Cross-Cloud Capabilities, Adobe Campaign, Experience Cloud Home), and with their “Adobe Services” (Adobe Sign In and Journey Orchestration).  These issues are affecting users across the Americas as reported on their Adobe Status page.

    We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as soon as they become available.


    FLRnet Maintenance 24 May, 5AM - 7 AM

    Starting 24 May at 5AM, FLR engineers will be performing code upgrades on the Panama City FLR edge node.

    Change in Adobe Creative Cloud Impact to Students
    8/26/2019
    Due to recent changes by Adobe to their Creative Cloud licensing model, students in any college computer lab or public-use area must obtain an Adobe ID to sign into Creative Cloud when the software prompts for credentials. Employees can continue to us their current network credentials.

    Students may get their free AdobeID to use on college computers at https://account.adobe.com. As always, remind students to log out of any software product or website when no longer using.

    We are experiencing slow connection speeds at this time. The cause is still under investigation. I will send an update as soon as more information is available.


    Urgent Network Maintainance
    9/7/2018
    The network is experiencing slow response time to the internet. The cause is a piece of network equipment that will need to be changed out. Today, September 7, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. access to the internet from on campus will be disrupted. From off campus the equipment change will affect access to the Gulf Coast website, MyGCSC, Canvas, Student email, eTranscript, Lighthouse.

    On August 5, between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. the network and internet access to the GCSC web page and MyGCSC will be interrupted. During this time network connectivity will be intermittent. This service interruption is required to update network connections. Access to Canvas, student email, and SSB will be affected.  


    Network Outage
    7/23/2018

    5:00 pm - The network is back online through an alternate, temporary, path. All systems should be back online. The cut fiber must still be repaired. Once the fiber is repaired we will schedule a downtime to cut back over to our normal fiber path.

    4:27 pm - The network suffered a fiber cut. A contractor has been contacted and will splice the fiber tonight. There is no firm ETA at this time. Access to Internet, canvas, email, banner and R: drive are affected.

    2:31 pm - The network is down. We are working the issue at this time. I will provide an update as we have more information.

    Internet Outage - Midnight to 4:00 am
    6/14/2018

    We suffered a unplanned temporary outage of our internet connection last night starting around midnight. The outage was due to emergency maintenance on the fiber for our internet. Unity Fiber had the repairs completed at approximately 4:00 am this morning. Access to our Web page, MyGCSC, Canvas, and SSB was down during this time. Students submitting assignments by midnight Wednesday may have been affected by this outage.

    The GCSC Website will be off line for approximately 30 minutes on Monday May 28, between 7:00 and 9:00 am. While the website is offline there will be no access to the MyGCSC portal. This will affect student and staff access to Canvas, SSB, and email.

    The network connection to the GCSC Gulf Franklin Campus has gone back down.  Due to this outage, any calls to the Gulf Franklin Campus cannot be completed using the school’s internal 4-digit dialing scheme.  The Gulf Franklin Campus can be called directly by their landline connection at 850-227-9670.

    We will notify everyone when the Gulf Franklin network connection has been restored.

    Right now we are experiencing technical difficulties resulting in the GCSC telephone system not being able to receive calls from off-campus numbers.

    Our voice network engineer is actively working the issue, and will keep us apprised of the situation.

    Information Technology Services (I.T.S.) Updates

    I.T.S. will be rolling out additional security measures in the following week. One of which is a newer version of our anti-malware software. So, if you see a new icon appear on your taskbar, you can hover your mouse over it and you will see it is Malwarebytes End Point Protection. Other security enhancements will follow. These changes will help protect you and our network from harmful downloads and threats to our institution.

    Our school has received an e-mail from Merissa Hudson that is a phishing attempt. Do not open, click on the link or download any information contained within the e-mail. Delete the e-mail immediately. If you have clicked on the link within the e-mail and/or downloaded any information from the link destination we need you to immediately turn off your machine and unplug it from the network. Then contact the GCSC Technical Support Desk so we can dispatch a technician to your location.

    Please take a moment to read this important information that impacts us all.

    The attached bulletin from Department of Homeland Security is one of many notifications we are getting from several agencies about increasing awareness of cybersecurity attacks. This and additional information has been shared with Executive Council and Academic Council and will be shared with students through email.

    An FBI Cyber Security Agent spoke at the last state CIO Meeting to make us aware that post-secondary institutions are a primary target for attacks due to the quantity of data we store. The FBI also explained that cyberwarefare attackers go after our institutions because of our infrastructure resources (such as high amount of bandwidth, U.S. based IP addresses, and high volume of computing power) in order to attack or steal information from other sites. 

    Your GCSC ITS Department is constantly researching new resources to protect our institution. However, as our SANS Security Training explains, technology defenses are not enough; you are the shield and your diligence in reporting suspicious activity is our most important defense.

    Reminders:

    • You will never be asked for your GCSC password and you should never ask anyone else for their password.
    • Do not attach your gulfcoast.edu email to any account the college doesn’t own.
    • Do not use the same passwords on college accounts or outside accounts.
    • Review IMM 5.063, Information Security Program, for additional information on security.
    • Completion of annual SANS Security training is critical for keeping current on trends and is required by policy and auditors.

    There is a current scam going around (they tried to get me as well) where you receive an email or text message about your bank account at Wells Fargo.  Do NOT use the link or provide any information in the link provided in the message.  If you want to verify your account status to make sure you haven’t already been victimized then call the bank using their published number and check.  Again, do not click on the link or provide any information regarding an email or text that you received.

    Our GCSC technical support team thought it best to share a few reminders regarding various types of phishing attempts.  

    If you receive an email from someone you do not know directing you to sign in to a website or provide confidential information, password or Social Security number, you may be a target of a phishing scam. 

    Here are a few helpful things to look out for.

    Unofficial "From" address. - Be watchful for email addresses that appear similar to, but not the same as, a company's official email address.
    Generic greeting - Be skeptical of an email sent with a generic greeting such as "Dear Customer" or Dear Member".
    Link to a fake web site - Pay close attention to URL's for mistakes or check for connection security indicators ("https", the padlock icon or any "Not Secure" warnings).
    Legitimate links mixed with fake links - Look before you click, hover the mouse over the linked URL this helps verify if it actually goes to the website you expect. If a link in an email or elsewhere looks suspicious, or you are not sure if a message seems legitimate, do not take the risk.

    Ad pop-up phishing attempts involve fraudulent messages that "pop-up" for users when surfing the web. Cybercriminals infect otherwise legitimate websites with malicious code. They present the website visitor with some kind of fraudulent warning, typically about the security of a person's computer. Then they either prompt the visitor to download some necessary tool to fix the problem, such as antivirus application, malware, or to contact a fraudulent phone number for support. This latter tactic is one of the most common means of infecting or retrieving user information.

    Due to these tactics, we are encouraging all to stay vigilant for malicious cyber activity through email or while searching websites. Use extreme caution with any received emails containing email attachments. Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages or visiting even well-known websites. Verify the legitimacy of any email solicitation or pop up by contacting the organization directly through a trusted contact number.

    A recent social engineering scam at another college attempted to gain network access by impersonating an IT technician. 

    Please remember that the GCSC I.T. department will never ask you for your passwords.  ITS will never ask you to use a remote software (such as Join-Me, TurboMeet, or GoTo meeting) to access your computers. Our I.T. department has other ways to remote into your computer if it is needed to address an issue.

    If you are asked to give control of your computer to an outside entity, do not comply, please report the incident to technical support right away.

Stay vigilant for malicious cyber activity centered around Hurricane Harvey including exercising caution with any storm-related emails, attachments, or hyperlinks, even those appearing to originate from trusted sources. Use caution with any received emails containing email attachments. Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages and verify the legitimacy of any email solicitation by contacting the organization directly through a trusted contact number.

    All GCSC members need to use caution when encountering these types of email messages.

    A phishing scam targeting GCSC users has been reported by several people. The message, emailed from a non-GCSC address, encourages users to view a message by means of a link regarding scheduling. This link leads to a deceptive site designed to trick you into doing something dangerous, like installing software, or revealing your personal information, like passwords, phone numbers or credit cards. If you have provided any password information to an external user please contact the Technical Support desk immediately so that we may take steps to secure your account.

    A phishing attempt is circulating encouraging users to manual update Webmail. This is from a non-GCSC email, please delete this email immediately! It does NOT come from a GCSC source. It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. Information Technology Services never solicits any such information by email. If you have already clicked on the link in this email and submitted your personal information, you need to change your GCSC Password as soon as possible.


    SECURITY WARNING: Financial Info Solicitation

    Please be advised that around the State of Florida, active attempts are underway by individuals to solicit financial information from specific individuals within colleges. In one instance, a payroll manager at another school in the State of Florida was sent a message that represented themselves as the Director of Human Resources and asked for the complete list of employee W2's to be emailed to their personal address. The payroll manager contacted the HR Director to verify it and determined that it was NOT legitimate. Be extremely vigilant of any requests to send responses to personal addresses. For security purposes, secure campus data should never be sent to non-campus email addresses. In directed security attempts such as this one, attackers will attempt to fully research position names and titles before contacting anyone and may even have checked their social media accounts or public records to help with the attempt.

The message was sent from a non-GCSC address, and links to a non-GCSC site. It is an attempt to harvest your password and gain access to the GCSC network.     Good Morning, Malicious attacks on our systems are increasing. To prevent significant risks to privacy, financial, and other college resources, pay attention to the following:

    • Never click a link, whether in an e-mail or a website, until you hover your mouse over the links without clicking to verify their actual source.
    • Do not download and install software from off-campus sources.
    • Do not click on links e-mailed to you directing you to a site to change your passwords. ITS will never e-mail you a direct link for password changes. Contact GCSC Technical Support if you have a question about any message or site. Thank you for your time and attention.

    Be wary of email messages from off campus accounts claiming that your email will expire in 24 hours and asking you to click on a link to validate your email. These are attempts to gain access to your account and providing your username and password will cause your account to become compromised.     Unsolicited Purchase Order Scam

    Several staff members have reported receiving unsolicited and unfamiliar purchase orders for unspecified items. The purchase orders do not specify where they came from, what they are for, and have random order confirmation numbers. They have PDF files attached. These are scams. Please ensure that you do not open the attachments or respond to the sender, as they may put your computer at risk of malware infection.


    ANTHEM - Blue Cross Blue Shield Data Breach

    We have been informed by the Consortium that a cyber-attack on Anthem may have resulted in having information on Florida Blue members compromised. Anthem is currently investigating and the impacted individuals will be contacted by U.S. Postal Service. In the meantime, be aware of e-mails requesting you to click links, provide credit cards, or social security numbers. Be aware of phone calls as well. How will I know if my health insurance identification number has been compromised? Is there anything that I can do to monitor this? If you have signed up for Florida Blue’s member portal, you can check claim activity by logging into your account at www.FloridaBlue.com. If you have not already registered for Florida Blue’s member portal, you can create an account by accessing www.FloridaBlue.com from your mobile device or computer. If you use your mobile device, select the green button that says “member login.” If you use your computer, select the blue button that says “login/register.” You will need your member number in order to register and it is located on your health care card. Employees should contact HR for insurance questions/concern and IT for validity of e-mails. ANTHEM has a website set up at www.anthemfacts.com for further information.

This very famous and very old scam operates by requiring “winners” to send processing fees to collect their non-existent winnings. There is always a new fee, and you will never collect winnings. Please ensure that you do not provide any information to the sender.

    Be warned that a message is being sent to several staff members claiming to be someone from “hccfl.edu” (you may receive it from other sources). The message announces that systems will be offline today and that you must re-activate your account on an off-campus site. No such downtime is scheduled today, nor are we requesting that you register for a service on any off-campus site. Please be wary of scams like this.

    Some staff members have received fake remittance confirmations and invoices from an unidentified company for “September and October Invoices”. This message is actually a virus, and the attachment can seriously harm your computer, downloading malware and stealing your login and financial information (or the financial information on the computer you’re using). The company names and sender names are generated at random.
